    <big grin>

She gave me her phone number about a week or so ago.  It almost seemed like she had been waiting for an excuse to give it to me.  we were chit-chatting up front and I happened to show her a text message that Stephani had sent me earlier in the day.  She (not stephani) got a real kick out of it and said I had to forward it to her, and gave me her number.

Well a couple of days later, we were chatting again, and I made the comment that we should hang out some time outside of the store.  She said something to the effect "Well, you have my number"

Since then, we have talked on the phone every day, some days as long as an hour and half.  Today, she was off work from the store, and did not have the boys, and I am not sure if she suggested it or I did, but either way, we finally had what I guess you would have to call our "first date".  I met her at her apartment, and we went and had a pleasent dinner, and talked.  It was so nice not to be watching the clock (30 minute lunch breaks while at work), and not to have the office girls in their little "ivory tower" shooting glances in our direction like we should not be talking to each other.  It was just so relaxing.

After dinner, we rode oiver the the store so that she could show off the new car that she got today - her old car that she had only had for a few monthes was beginning to develop a lot of issues, and she convinced her parents that the new car would be a better investment than fixing the old one.  The store manager has know her for several years, and almost treasts her like a little sister, so you can imagine the look on his face when he saw the two of us hanging out together this evening.  He has all but encouraged me to date this young lady, even going so far as to say that he wanted his family invited to "the wedding".  But it was funbeing a little scandalous for a little while.

We went back to her apartment where I told her "good night", and we parted ways.  And while I would have loved to give her a hug, I did not want to appear to be too agressive and scare her away.  I feel like we have a good friendship building and the there is good potential for a long term relationship, and I don't want to blow it.

hopefully thre will be more to the sage soon, until then......

    24 hours

amazing hours 24 hours will adjust ones outlook on things with the right external motivators.  i was off work today, and as usual, my only plans were to wash clothes and watch tv all day.  last night, i got a text message from a "friend" at work, apologizing for not returning my call yesterday afternoon. and promising to call today.  needless to say, i was not optimistic - she has her children today, and with her hands full with three boys, i was not expecting to hear from her.  lets just say, three different calls and an hour and half later, i have a lot better outlook on life.

    more later, maybe   Smile

    i'm alive!

i apologize in advance....i just started typing, and before i knew it this became almost a rant.

yes, I am alive.  kinda dropped off the face of the "Blog" earth for a while, but i am back...mostly because i need to vent a little bit, and since i have lost touch with a lot of the people that i used to hang out with - thanks for moving half way across the country, you bastards!  j/k - i figured, i might as well use this medium.

where do i begin?  dropped mother off at the airpoprt this morning so that she could head up to michigan.  my grandmother is in the hospital right now, but according to stephani, they are talking about letting her go home in a couple of days maybe.  i really would love to get up there to visit, since it has been like four years since i was up to the frigid nawth, but i am not even sure if i have any vacation time available to go.

i am tired of working my butt off, looking forward to having and evening off or a day off, and NOTHING to do, no plans, no one to hang out with.  I joked a few years ago that I got a fortune cookie with the fortune "You badly need a new circle of friends".  could not ring any truer right lately.  i am tired of being single.  i tired of being a chicken-shit introvert.  all i was in life is someone to come home to and reassure me that "yes, i am killing myself, but 1) that will bnot always be the case, and 2) there is a light at the end of the tunnel and someday i will actually have a life.

i am tired of coming home in after work, having several hundred numbers in my cell phonebook, and not having a single person that i could call up and say "hey, lets go get a beer".  i am tired of being tired all the time.  i am tired of feeling like i am the only one who is willing to bust his butt to get the job done at work.  i am frankly tired of the grocery business, but i have basically no motivation to get out of the job that i am in.  i am tired of the feeling that there are things in my life that i have not accomplished yet (wife, kids, etc) and that at this point i almost feel like i may never accomplish.  i am tired of being held to one standard and not being able to hold others to the same standard.  i am tired of wanting to be an asshole once in a while, but repressing the urge because i know it will do no good.  i am tired of people who want everything in the world handed to them, but are not willing to leave the world the way they found it for the next guy.

i am tired of not understanding people in general.  i am tired of not understanding women.  i am tired of being alone.  i am tired of driting through life with nothing but church and washing clothes to break up the monotany.  i sometimes feel like noone up there is listening.  i am tired of feeling like there is no one to listen.

    i need a hug..........

    been a long time

Been a long time since I have blogged.  I was thinking about this earlier today, looked online and found this simple little prayer written long ago by someone very wise:

      [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]
      []                                      []
      []      Governer Edward's Prayer        []

Edwin Edwards is my Shepered; I shall not want.  He leadest me by still factories and abandoned farms.  He restoreth my doubt about the Democratic Party. He anoineteth my wages with taxes and inflation, so my expenses unneth over my income.  Surely poverty and hard living shall follow the Democractic Party, and I shall work on a rented farm and live in a rented house forever. Five thousand years ago Moses said, "Pack up your camel, pick up your shovel, move your ass and I will lead you to the Promise Land." Five thousand years later Franklin D.  Roosevelt said, "Lay down your shovel, sit on your ass, light a Camel, this is the Promise Land." This year Edwin Edwards will take your shovel, sell your camel, kick your ass and tell you he gave away the Promise Land!  I'm glad I'm an American.  I'm glad I'm free.  I wish I were a dog, and Edwin Edwards was a tree.

    Survival Pt. 2

I am so happy to report this afternoon that we are high and dry yet again after the second huricane in less than a month.  We only lost power here at the house briefly a couple of times, so we actually fared much better than last time.  Lots of winds here on the west side of the storm, and more small debris, but no damage here.  Check out the photo album for some pictures from around the neighborhood.  Several large trees down in the area.  Still power out in a lot of small areas of Baton Rouge, but it sounds like a lot of power has been restored.

I went in to work this morning, but by 8 am business was slow, so the boss sent most of the employees home.  Finally a day to rest - it's been a long few weeks since Katrina.

Well, I need to go cook dinner so that I can get to bed soon.  Hard to say how business will be tomorrow, and with no one working all day, there is no telling how much will have to be done to get "back in business".

I hope everyone fared ok through the storm.

    Time to Rant

Now, normally, I try to keep this blog kind of one the light hearted side.  Mostly jokes and other amusing stuff that I stumble across.  Today, I have to rant.

Don't get me wrong.  I have all of the sympathy in the world for the people of New Orleans who were displaced by the storm early last week.  They have been a double edged sword for me, however.  On the one hand, business has been BOOMING at the grocery store this week, and by the time holiday pay for Labor day is figured in, I will be paid for about 92 hours this week.  The money will be great (thank goodness for not being on salary any more ).  On the other hand, traffic is getting ridiculous.

Mr. Sam - owner of the store - "did us a favor" and told us to shut down early and get some rest this evening.  My boss and I have been working basically 6 am to 9 pm every day for a week now.  So I left the store at 5:45 this evening.  Normally, I take Coursey Blvd. to Sherwood Forest, then a short cut through a neighborhood, putting me home in about 25 to 30 minutes.  This is what happened today.

I left Jones Creek about 5:45.  I caught the light red in front of Wal-Mart...No problem.  Happens all the time.  It was still daylight, so I called Stephani and had her go get me gas for the lawn mower.  I have not cut the grass in over two weeks, either between rain and working too much.  At the same time that I turned onto Coursey, and passed Wal-Mart, a gentleman in the inner lane ran out of gas.  At the time, we were both past the nearby gas station, and there was no chance of getting back, so he got out and started to push.  As I creeped down Coursey, this gentleman pushing his car was keeping pace with me (and traffic) all the way to Sherwood.  The Texaco at Sherwood was out of gas, so he pushed his car across the intersection and further down Coursey.  By now, it was almost 6:45, and since I was near Alltel, and my bill is due on the 7th, I stopped to pay my bill.  When I was finished (now 6:58 according to the receipt), I pulled back out, only 2 cars behind the "car pusher".  It was now getting dark, and all hope of cutting the grass were dashed.  Long story short, the Circle K at the corner of Coursey and Cedarcrest had gas, so I allowed the ficticious "car pusher" to cut in front of me and get gas before I turned down Cedarcrest.  15 minutes of creeping along later, I made it home at 7:45.  So glad that I was allowed to leave "early" so I could get some rest this evening.  Thankfully, Stephani has twice now been kind enough to wash clothes for me.  THANK YOU STEPHANI!

So, anyway.  Enough ranting.  In case you did not realize, the out-of-gas guy is fake.  Just trying to make a point.  I am so glad that I work early in the morning and only have to fight this once a day.  I have found a gas station that is not busy early in the morning, so the gas lines have not been an issue for me.  I am so looking forward to my check on Friday so the I can at least justify in my mind all the overtime this week.  I am torn now - do I want them to add more personel to our store and trim my time back to normal, or do I want to continue to work absurd hours and rake in the cash.  My boss is liking it - even though he is on salary, a little "extra" was in his check last week to ensure that he was at least making more than his butcher.  Gonna take a lot more "little extras" this week the way things are going.

    More later.

    I'm Alive

Well, it has been a crazy week.  Huricane Katrina has made my days at the grocery store a LOT longer this week.  In spite of not working at all on Monday, my check this week was for 53 hours.  I worked today - was supposed to be my day off - so right now, if I only work 8 hour day the rest of the week - yeah, right - I have almost 20 hours of overtime.  The only real good side to working all those hours is that it has kept me out of the house, so I have only had to survive the power-free, a/c-free conditions of the house at night.  Thank goodness for gas water heaters.  We only got power back this afternoon, and I fully expected cold showers after work starting Tuesday.  Our neighbor next door still does not have power, and neither do the people across the street.  I went next door this evening to offer to allow our neightbor to "plug in" - at least get some air circulating in his house and a little light, but he was no home.  I still need to clean up the yard, but otherwise the storm left us largely no worse for the wear.  But enough about that.

I have been kind of a blog slug the last six weeks or so, and I promise to correct that problem.  I owe my readers that much.  I have been alive, but other diversions have not allowed my to dedicate as much time to blogging as I should.  I will try to correct that.

That is all for now.  More tomorrow.  I promise to try.

BTW, Stephani's birthday is Sunday, so be sure to email or call birthday wishes.  Her email is steki@aol.com

    Slow week

Well, it's been a few days since I blogged, and other than a couple of appointments this week have both brought a little peace of mind.  Intentionally vague.  Otherwise, it has been a very slow week.  Just work.  Can't think hardly of nothing too unexciting.  Looking around to see if there is anything amusing in the world:

Taking a poll here:  Who thinks this is a bad idea?

Might have to go back to school if this idea catches on.

Just waiting for the day that this article is talking about somewhere in Louisiana.

My faith in NASA is restored.

More later.  Maybe tomorrow will be more exciting.

    Happy Sunday!

Ok, so it's not a holiday.  Really ain't got a whole lot to say today.  Typical Sunday at work. So instead, I will present some funny junk:

Do life insurance companies consider participation a suicide attempt?

    Perhaps everyone except Dr. Cole.

Does anyone else find foreshadowing in the title of this article?

Occasionally, my blog is good for a few snickers, however it might not be a good idea to get your snickers in Australia.

Perhaps these people should be arrested for alcohol abuse as well.

    More tomorrow...

    Interesting questions

Nothing too exciting today.  I thought about this question a few weeks ago, the Sammy posed another, so here are a couple of thinkers to keeps y'all busy for a while:
    • On the Fox show Malcolm In the Middle, what is Malcolm's family's last name?
    • Name a movie in which Tom Hanks has appeared that he has not had a scene with him urinating.

Other funny stuff I've seen today:

    Another Day off...

Had nothing really planned for today, so I slept late.  It felt so good not having to get out of bed and be at work by 6 am.  I saw War of the Worlds this afternoon.  It was pretty good.  Being that I have know the "story" for a long time, it was refreshing to see that the special effects were sufficient to create a good movie.  Now I have to look around the house and see if I can find the tapes of the original radio broadcast that I have had for many many years.

Not really sure what Dennis is going to do, but as of right now, it looks to be headed toward Florida and Georgia, but that has not stopped the gas stations around town from hiking up gas prices.  The Wal-Mart around the corner from the store was at $2.01.  Today, regular gas is $2.17.  No telling how much more it is gonna go up.  They should designate stations for the locals, or allow us to scan our Baton Rouge addressed drivers licenses so that only the tourists and people fleeing the storm get gouged.  Just a suggestion.

Of course, we are not the only ones getting gouged.

Some people have too much time on their hands.  Maybe we have these  scientists to blame.

Speaking of movies, when is this one coming out?  I for one can't wait.

Enough for now.  Maybe more later.

    ...And a Joke

Sammy (my boss) and I will on occasion, spontaneously break out in song.  I think it is the 15 years in the cold that has done something to my brain, though I am not sure what Sammy's excuse is.  For the sake of argument, we'll assume it is the same thing.  Anyway, For the heck of it, I looked up the lyrics to that 1971 Coca-Cola comercial.  Just in case anyone is interested in the history of that rather memorable song.

Speaking of music, check out some of the very recognizable titles on this song list.

Stephani says this is no coincidence.

Perhaps London wishes these were worth more.

Do I remember seeing some of these near campus while I was at LSU?

It seems that we have our own dialect here in the south.

OK.  I watch The History Channel and Discovery Channel all the time and this is the first I see about this

This is too cool, especially if you are still in American History class.

I haven't anything else too thought provoking to say today, so just leave you with this joke:

An Irish woman of advanced age visited her physician to ask his help in reviving her husband's libido.

"What about trying Viagra? asks the doctor.

"Not a chance", she said. "He won't even take an aspirin".

"Not a problem", replied the doctor.  "Give him an Irish Viagra.  Drop it into his coffee.  He won't even taste it.  Give it a try and call me in a week to let me know how things went".

It wasn't a week later that she called the doctor, who directly inquired as to progress.  The poor dear exclaimed, "Oh, faith, bejaysus and begorrah!  T'was horrid.  Just terrible, doctor!".

"Really? What happened" asked the doctor?

"Well, I did as you advised and slipped it in his coffee and the effect was almost immediate. He jumped hisself straight up, with a twinkle in his eye, and with his pants a-bulging fiercely! With one swoop of his arm, he
sent the cups and tablecloth flying, ripped me clothes to tatters and took me then and there, making wild, mad, passionate love to me on the tabletop! It was a nightmare, I tell you, an absolute nightmare!"

"Why so terrible?" asked the doctor, "Do you mean the sex your husband provided wasn't good"?

"Oh, no, no, no, doctor, the sex was fine indeed!  'Twas the best sex I've had in 25 years!  But sure as I'm sittin' here, I'll never be able to show me face in Starbucks again".

    Wednesday Bloody Wednesday

What can I say?  It was another exciting day at the Nabor.  Lets just start off saying this -  Wednesdays are always a pain in the butt.  We have 4 or 5 restaurant right around the store that all want special orders every Wednesday morning.  Sammy, my department manager, worked a short day yesterday, so on top of the meat case being largely wiped out, the cooler was a mess.  I had to spend half an hour cleaning it up before I could move the shipment that came in today into the cooler.  Then make ground beef - usually takes about an hour.  Cut meat for sausage for Pokey.  About the time I am finishing Pokey's stuff, George calls and needs 60 cube steaks (like normal on Wednesday).  Half way through George's stuff, Andy calls and needs rumps for later in the morning (not a regular Wednesday caller, but not uncommon.  Check out his meat pies if you miss the ones from Lasyones).   While I am on the phone with Andy, Nick calls needing ground beef - and he is never more than 10 minutes away when he calls in the morning.  All of this by 9:30 am.

Enough ranting and raving about work.  But then, as exciting as things have been lately, what else do I blog about?

I did see - or at least my sister told me - that other people are reading my blog once in a while.  It seems that someone, not to mention any names, saw my first entry (I can only assume that she was refering to me.  I don't know who else has started new blogs lately) and commented that all new blogs seem to start "New blog.  Nothing to say."  Might have to consult a lawyer and see if I have a leg to sue for mental anguish or something.  Anyone know any good attorneys that can practice in Louisiana?   LOL!

    A Wasted day off

    Just links.  Maybe more later:

I ran across this many years ago, and it still cracks me up every time I see it.  It is a brief history of the world according to high school student papers.

In the same vein - humor that is - The Bastard Operator from Hell - Chap 1-4.

Not that I know what I would have a use for this for, but here is a 10,000 year calendar.

Not exactly the most useful information in the world, but probably everything that you could ever want to know about calendars.  And, if you find that interesting, wrap your brain around this article.  And, if you are curious, current time in Louisiana as well as where the old people are.

Lots and lots of funny junk on this site.  Pics and video galore.

Another site that I heard about a long time ago, but well worth sharing.  Experience Beatallica.

And, as a side note, since I am almost certain that I will forget, and early Happy Birthday to Dr. Cole.  His birthday is not until July 17, but I quite sure I will forget.  So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR. COLE!

    Happy 4th of July

Well, the work day was a little longer than I hoped that it would be, but I did get outa there about 1.  Came home and smoked a pork roast (boston butt) -  <you shoulda seen the size of the rolling paper ... lol>.  It came out  most excellent.  Leftovers for days - and if mother asks real nice, maybe I will freeze part of it.  I like smoking meat, it just takes so long, and I can't wait to take it off the smoker to try the meat.  More often than not, I will smoke a pork roast and a chicken at the same time.  That was my intention today, however, when I went to pick up a bag of leg quarters before I left, all of them were frozen.  So, all I cooked was the pork roast.  Came out, as I said, most excellent.

I am going to start adding links to my blogs when I run across particularly cool one (at least in my humble opinion).  I found this one while watching a movie on tv and surfing at the same time.  This is a website that has a lot of great information on just about every movie that I have searched, including "goofs", dis-continuities, etc.  I've gotten in the habit of looking over the list to see if I can find the same goofs while watching the movie - make tv a little less passive an activity.

I decided not to go anywhere to watch fireworks this year, but I did find a place to watch them at home: for those of you who can't get enough of fireworks!

Well, time to finish eating and watch "Die Hard", and watch for the goofs.  More later.

    Ho Hum

Well, it's been a slow and uneventfull week.  Mostly just work, work, and oh yeah, work.  Had a heck of a wind storm blow through yesterday.  I was on my way home from work when Stephani called and said that the wind had really kicked up at the house.  I looked down Coursey toward Airline, and saw what looked like a huge wave of dust headed my direction.  I decided to stop at the Wal-Mart and wait it out.  Later the news reported that there were gusts of wind in excess of 50 miles per hour reported.  That was about the most exciting thing that has happened all week.  I am supposed to be off work tomorrow, but the boss told me that the schedule was purely decorative, and that he would see me at 7 in the morning.  Maybe it will be a short day.

Well, maybe tomorrow there will be something more exciting to report.

    Tuck, Tumble and Flop

Well, the day started out with a bang this morning.  I went in to work at 5 this morning, and shortly after I got there, I was back in the warehouse.  I was supposed to help the manager raise the dock plate so that the trailer could be unloaded.  After Tim (the store manager) unlocked the first door, and moved on to the next door, I got bored with waiting for him, so I decided to break the seal on the trailer door.  I crouched down to remove the seal, and on the first try it would not break.  I pulled a little harder on the second try, still nothing.  Finally, I decided pull as hard as I could.  I kinda stood up and leaned back while pulling the plastic seal.  Finally it broke, and I lost my balance.  I staggered backward for a couple of steps, lost my balance, and tumbled onto my bottom.  My momentum carried me into a backward roll, and when I finally stopped rolling, I stood up and brushed myself off.  Unfortunately, the entire episode was caught on the store security camera.  Yes, it was amusing, but it was even funnier to watch, not only in real time, but also slowed down, sped up, and in reverse.  Tim must have shown the video to every person that came in to work today.  He said the he is going to get me a copy of the video - it would probably be a good contender for Americas Funniest Videos.

After that, the day was mostly just boring.  Getting ready to head for a meeting this evening.  More later.

    New Blog

Well, just for the heck of it, I've started my own blog page.  I don't really have all that much to say today.  All for now, more later.
